Mike McHardy

Subsea Field Engineer, DOF Subsea

Module: Subsea infrastructure removal & site remediation

Biography

Mike McHardy is a Chartered Engineer and Subsea Field Engineer at DOF Subsea, with significant expertise in the planning and execution of complex subsea decommissioning operations. He leads the module Subsea Engineering & Offshore Execution in Decommissioning, providing learners with practical, technical insight into subsea project delivery from regulatory planning through to field execution.

Mike’s career spans a wide range of offshore roles, including vessel field engineer, senior project engineer, and client representative on high-profile decommissioning campaigns. His experience includes flexible and spool installation, riser disconnection, well severance and recovery, gravity-based structure installation, and tree intervention, equipping him with a comprehensive understanding of field-level challenges and innovative engineering solutions. Notably, Mike contributed to an industry-first subsea tree repair project, managing it from FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) through installation and commissioning.

His onshore and offshore experience gives him a unique perspective on bridging project design with safe, efficient offshore delivery. With a strong foundation in engineering and field operations, Mike’s module empowers learners to understand the technical nuances and execution risks involved in offshore decommissioning, as well as the practical strategies required for successful subsea project outcomes.

Experience & Expertise

Training Course Module

Mike McHardy delivers his Lean Decom training course module, ‘Subsea Infrastructure Removal’. In this module, he provides a comprehensive walkthrough of the methods, hazards, and lessons learned during the recovery of subsea assets, marking one of the final chapters of the decommissioning process and providing the decision context required to plan decommissioning projects.

Mike covers the technical and logistical requirements for removing diverse subsea infrastructure, including concrete mattresses, Christmas trees, flexibles, and midwater arches. He explains efficiency drivers such as recovery tools and discusses the complexities of handling some of the infrastructure. Mike also shares professional guidance on site remediation, the importance of early supply chain engagement to reduce vessel time, and the vital role of data integrity in mitigating the risks posed by unknown asset conditions.
